The Indo Italian Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Bengaluru had organized a Seminar Presentation on 'EU Approach for Building Materials: Eco-Labeling & Product Environmental Protocol Launch' on 25th September 2015 at Hotel Le Meridien, Bengaluru and Mr. S. Krishna Prasad, Vice President, FIGSI was one of the Guest of Honour in the Seminar. Mr. N.K. Aswathrama, General Secretary and Mr. K.B. Munivenkata Swamy, Chief Executive Officer also attended the seminar.
The Indo Italian Chamber of Commerce & Industry is coordinating & promoting the 'Make it Sustainable Building Materials' project along with its partners CEIPiemonte (Piedmonte Agency for Investment, Export and Tourism) and Coventry University Enterprises Ltd in collaboration with EBTC (European Business & Technology Centre) aimed at creating a framework for recognizing green building materials and transferring knowhow in eco-labeling and environmental product declaration areas, based on European best practices.
The overall project objective is to create:
- a set of Product Environmental Protocols (PEP) based on the principles of the EN 14020 series of standards and taking into account the Indian Standards and Indian market conditions
- a framework for establishing in India an internationally recognized system, to distinguish building materials with superior environmental characteristics (Unique Selling Proposition) - opportunities for Indo-European cooperation in the field of sustainability in construction.
In order to carry out such a task, they are engaged with the most relevant EU and Indian stakeholders to lay down sets of PEP in three Families of Products: Cement, Concrete & Mortar; Waterproofing & Insulation; Brick & Tiles. The task will be carried out by Technical Committees specifically appointed. In compliance with ISO standards, they have also set-up a Review Committee, composed of distinguished professionals from European and Indian research institutes, sector associations and civil society organizations.
